The city of Centralia in the United States ("Silent Hill") :

Located in Pennsylvania, the city of Centralia was down to seven people in 2007, against 1,000 in 1981 The reason for this fantômisation of the city: a huge fire underground trash in its former coal mine (which had been transformed into landfill) which broke out in 1962 Devastated by the gas, the city suffered even 20 years later fumes of carbon monoxide. In 1981, the order was given to evacuate the city. 

Today, the fire continues to move 15 meters per year: the basement of Centralia should burn even 250 years. It's a ghost town very dangerous but still accessible by the more adventurous.
